Aussie Outback Bratwurst with Apple and Onions

Picture this: the crimson hues of an Australian sunset, a campfire crackling nearby, and the tantalising aroma of bratwurst sizzling. This recipe combines the traditional German bratwurst with a sweet twist, inspired by the Aussie outback. Fresh apple, aromatic ginger, and spicy mustard come together, making it a dish that even the local kangaroos might hop over for a sniff!

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons Canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 8 bratwurst (uncooked variety)
  • 2 medium brown onions, sliced into rings
  • 1 “thumb-sized” piece of fresh ginger, sliced thinly
  • 3 tsp cinnamon
  • 1.5 litres of apple juice
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • 8 damper rolls (or other rustic rolls)
  • Spicy bush tomato chutney or mustard for garnish

Bushland Directions:

  1. In a deep pan over your campfire or portable stove, melt the butter and canola oil on medium heat.
  2. Introduce the onions and thinly sliced ginger to the pan. Cook these until they're soft and just beginning to take on a golden hue.
  3. Gradually pour in the apple juice, followed by the cinnamon. Allow this mix to come to a gentle simmer.
  4. On the side, half-cook the bratwurst over a flame or hot skillet, ensuring a good sear on the outside while retaining a pinkish interior.
  5. Using a fork, pierce the bratwurst on the uncooked sides, making 2-3 punctures per side.
  6. Now, immerse the bratwurst into the simmering apple-onion mix and cover. Let them cook together for about 30 minutes.
  7. Infuse the mix with the liquid smoke and let it sit for a short while.
  8. Serve up the bratwurst in the damper rolls, topped with those delectably sweet onions. Add a dollop of spicy bush tomato chutney or mustard for that extra kick.

Outback Tips:

  • For an added Aussie touch, swap out standard mustard for bush tomato chutney, a spicy and tangy native fruit relish.
  • The damper, an iconic Australian bread, pairs perfectly with this dish, adding to the bushland feel.

There you have it, mate! An outback take on a classic bratwurst. With each bite, may you feel the vastness of the Australian landscape and the warmth of its fiery sunsets. Here's to culinary adventures as wild and flavourful as the land down under! Cheers!
