Campfire Calzone Delight

When the wilderness calls, and you're surrounded by the melodies of nature, there's no need to sacrifice a gourmet meal! Calzones are Italy's lesser-known gift to the world of pizza lovers, and this campfire version is the perfect blend of rustic and delicious. Here's a recipe to make your outdoor experience even more memorable.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 package of bread dough or 1 package of pizza dough
  • 1 jar of spaghetti sauce
  • 250 grams Italian sausage
  • 1 cup mushrooms, chopped
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

Instructions:

  1. Prep Work: If you're starting at home, prepare your ingredients so they're easy to manage at the campsite. Chop the mushrooms and onions and store them in a container. You can also pre-cook the Italian sausage to save time at the camp.
  2. Calzone Base: Flatten your chosen dough on a cold, flat surface like a cutting board or even a clean camp table.
  3. Layer Up: Spread a generous amount of spaghetti sauce onto half of the flattened dough, leaving a margin around the edge for sealing. Add your pre-cooked Italian sausage, chopped mushrooms, onions, and a generous sprinkle of mozzarella cheese.
  4. Seal the Deal: Fold the dough over your fillings to create a half-moon shape. Pinch and crimp the edges securely to seal all the goodness inside. Don't forget to poke a few air holes on the top with a fork. This ensures steam can escape and prevents a doughy explosion!
  5. Campfire Cooking: Depending on your campfire equipment:
    1. Pie Iron: Place the calzone inside and cook over the campfire, turning occasionally until golden brown.
    2. Dutch Oven: Heat the Dutch oven on the fire and place the calzone inside. Cover with the lid and let it cook until it's golden and crispy.
    3. Foil Method: Wrap the calzone in heavy-duty foil and place it in hot coals, turning occasionally for even cooking.
  6. Time to Feast: Once your calzone is golden brown and the cheese is melted inside, remove it from the fire. Allow it to cool for a couple of minutes. Slice, pour over some of the reserved spaghetti sauce, and dive in!

Note:

A calzone, like life in the wild, is versatile. Feel free to experiment with fillings based on your preferences or what you have on hand. Think bell peppers, olives, or even some spicy pepperoni.

A day in the embrace of nature deserves an ending with a special meal. With the chirping of the crickets and the warmth of the campfire, your calzone will be a camping memory to cherish! Safe travels and bon appétit!
